What Are SN4 and SN8? How to Choose the Most Suitable Corrugated Pipe for Your Project?

Infrastructure Systems and Applications | SOR Plastic

Corrugated pipes are an indispensable choice for engineers and project managers looking for long-lasting, durable, and environmentally friendly solutions in infrastructure projects. However, the technical specifications of these pipes are not the same for every project. Terms such as "SN4" and "SN8" play an important role in determining the pipe's durability and usage areas.

What Do SN4 and SN8 Mean?

The term "SN" is an abbreviation of "Stiffness Number," which expresses the rigidity degree of pipes under environmental loads. As the SN value increases, the pipe's resistance to external pressure increases.

  • SN4: Has a stiffness of 4 kN/m². Suitable for areas with low-density soil cover and no traffic load.
  • SN8: Has a stiffness of 8 kN/m². Preferred in high traffic, soil pressure, or challenging ground conditions.

These values are generally determined according to European standards (EN 13476) and are fundamental criteria for selecting the appropriate pipe in infrastructure systems.

How to Choose the Appropriate SN Value According to Your Project?

Factors such as the soil characteristics of the environment where corrugated pipes will be used, traffic load, installation depth, and groundwater level are important in selecting the SN value.

SN4 Usage Areas

  • Garden and park irrigation lines
  • Rainwater drainage
  • Cable passage
  • Projects under light loads

SN8 Usage Areas

  • Roads, highways, airports
  • Port areas, industrial facilities
  • High traffic areas
  • Systems with high soil cover
Important: Choosing the wrong SN class can cause deformation, pipe collapse, or leakage over time. This increases both environmental risks and maintenance costs.

Basic Features of Sor Plastic Corrugated Pipes

At Sor Plastic, our corrugated pipes produced from high-quality polyethylene raw material are available in both SN4 and SN8 classes. Our products are designed specifically for each project and manufactured in various diameters.

Production in all diameters with either integrated socket or plain ends
Seal design providing leak resistance up to 0.5 bar
Quick installation without the need for extra sleeves
High chemical and abrasion resistance
External leak protection in areas with high groundwater
Light-colored inner surface for internal inspection with camera
Service life over 50 years
Easy storage and transportation with telescopic stacking

The inner surface of our corrugated pipes is smooth, preventing solid particles from sticking to the surface and minimizing system blockages. This reduces maintenance requirements and keeps the system functioning healthily for many years.

Socketed and Non-Socketed Options

According to the project requirements, we have two different production types:

Socketed (Sealed)

Standard 6-meter lengths, suitable for easy installation.

Can be installed quickly under construction site conditions.

Non-Socketed

Can be produced in special dimensions upon request. Joined using sleeves and seals.

Preferred for long pipeline runs.

Both systems provide advantages of quick assembly, leak-tightness, and workmanship. Their flexible structures prevent cracking or breaking due to ground movements. Additionally, they are resistant to all kinds of climatic conditions.

Quality Control and Certification

Sor Plastik applies quality control at every stage of the production process. Production is carried out in compliance with international standards such as EN 13476 and ISO 21138. Additionally, the production processes are documented with the ISO 9001 quality management system.

Quality Assurance

All products undergo pressure testing, leakage testing, and diameter inspection before shipment. This minimizes potential installation problems on the customer side.

Quality compliance certificates are also provided to customers with every shipment.

Thanks to the high-quality production process, our products are reliably preferred by local governments, municipalities, construction companies, and engineering offices.
